How Often Should You Groom Your Dog in Houston?

March 2026 — Paws on Wheels Houston

Houston's climate is genuinely different from most of the country. High humidity from spring through fall, temperatures above 90°F for months at a time, and a short mild winter mean your dog's coat needs more attention than in drier climates. Here is what we recommend by coat type.

Why Houston's Climate Changes the Math

Humidity keeps coats from drying fully between outdoor trips. That moisture trapped close to the skin creates ideal conditions for bacteria and yeast — leading to that classic "wet dog smell" even hours after a bath, skin irritation, and in double-coated breeds, matting that forms faster than you would expect.

Houston dogs also shed more actively through longer warm seasons. Without regular de-shedding treatments, that loose undercoat compacts and mats rather than falling out naturally.

By Coat Type

**Short, smooth coats (Boxers, Beagles, Chihuahuas, Labs)** Every 6 to 8 weeks. These dogs do not mat, but Houston heat and humidity means they benefit from a bath and brush more often than in cooler climates. A good bath removes dead skin cells and allergens that accumulate faster here.

**Long, silky coats (Yorkies, Maltese, Silky Terriers)** Every 4 to 5 weeks. Long coats in humidity mat aggressively. Without regular maintenance, you can go from a manageable coat to a matted mess in less than two months. Most of our long-coated clients come every 4 weeks.

**Double-coated breeds (Huskies, Golden Retrievers, German Shepherds, Corgis)** Every 5 to 6 weeks with regular de-shedding treatments. This is critical in Houston. Double-coated dogs that go too long without de-shedding develop compacted undercoats that trap heat — the opposite of what you want in a Texas summer. A proper de-shedding treatment removes the dead undercoat and lets the remaining coat do its job of insulating against heat.

**Curly or wavy coats (Poodles, Doodles, Bichons, Portuguese Water Dogs)** Every 4 to 6 weeks. Curly coats mat faster than any other type, and Houston humidity accelerates this significantly. Many doodle owners come every 4 weeks. Going longer risks mats that require shaving the entire coat down.

**Wire coats (Schnauzers, Terriers)** Every 6 to 8 weeks. Wire coats are more resistant to matting but still benefit from regular maintenance in Houston's climate.

Signs Your Dog Needs Grooming Sooner

  • A musty or sour smell that returns quickly after bathing at home
  • Visible matting, especially behind the ears, in armpits, or around the collar
  • Excessive scratching without a visible cause (often trapped debris or skin irritation under the coat)
  • A coat that looks "puffed" — a sign of undercoat accumulation in double-coated breeds

Our Recommendation

Most Houston dogs do best on a 4 to 6 week grooming schedule. We keep records of your dog's coat condition at each appointment, so if we notice it is going too long between visits we will tell you.

If you are unsure what schedule makes sense for your dog, give us a call — we can talk through your dog's specific coat type and give a concrete recommendation.
